State of Utah proclaims advanced closed fire season in Washington County

Due to warmer temperatures, drier than normal weather, and dry fuel conditions, the Utah Department of Natural Resources and Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands has announced the closed fire season for Washington County will begin on Thursday, 12 May. Normally, closed fire season begins on 1 June.

Closed fire season restricts open burning on unincorporated state and private land in Washington County beginning Thursday. Given the high wind warnings over the next two days, it is unlikely DVFR will be able to issue any burn permits in advance of closed fire season. Residents with yard debris should begin planning other means of disposal.

In anticipation of a shorter burn season, DVFR has applied for two grants that would provide chipping opportunities to residents. More information about these programs will be shared as soon as DVFR is notified of the status of those applications.
